Andrea Cappelleri

Biography

Conductor, artistic director, teacher, Andrea Cappelleri continuously conducts a very diverse repertoire ranging from opera to classical and romantic symphonies,
from early 20th century to contemporary avant-garde music. He has conducted important national and international orchestras, including: Pomeriggi Musicali, the “C. Coccia” Symphony Orchestra of Novara, the Italian Philharmonic Orchestra (OFI), the Abruzzese Symphony Orchestra, Solisti Aquilani, Filarmonici Friulani, the Parlarte Orchestra of Budapest (Hungary), the Ulsan Philharmonic Orchestra, the Masan Philharmonic Orchestra, the Changwon Philharmonic Orchestra, the Daegu International Opera Festival Orchestra (South Korea), the Ploiesti State Philharmonic Orchestra (Romania), the Bucharest National Academy Orchestra (Romania), and the Opera in Roma Orchestra.

Particularly distinguished in the opera repertoire, he has already conducted H. Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, G. Rossini's Mosè, W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, G. Rossini's Mosè, Il Signor Bruschino, and Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and G. Puccini's Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. In South Korea, where he is often invited as a guest conductor, he has conducted Rossini's La Cenerentola (2008-2022 Daegu Opera Festival) and G. Puccini's Madama Butterfly (2009, Daegu Opera House). Verdi's La Traviata (2011, Ulsan), Puccini's Turandot and La Boheme (2011 and 2014, Changwon).

He has recorded Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle for the Brilliant Classics label. In 2024, he released a CD for the Naxos/Dynamic label in which he conducts G. Mahler's Symphony No. 4 in E. Stein's arrangement for large ensemble.

In the symphonic field, he has built up a diverse repertoire with the orchestras he has worked with, performing in concert a large part of the 20th-century symphonic repertoire: Tombeau de Couperin (M. Ravel), An American in Paris (G. Gershwin), Estancia (A. Ginastera), Concerto Rumanesc, Cello Concerto (G. Ligeti), Rendering, Ritirata Notturna di Madrid (L Berio).

He made his debut in October 2021 at the Teatro “C. Coccia” in Novara, conducting a tribute concert to Tchaikovsky with the Fifth Symphony in E minor, Op. 64, on the program. In July 2022, he performed Ludwig Van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Op. 125, in D minor for the Villa Nigra Opera Festival.

He has been a guest at numerous contemporary music festivals and ensembles, such as: Alba Music Festival, Italian Society of Contemporary Music (SIMC), Amici della Musica di Modena, GAMO (Florence), Nuova Consonanza (Rome), Rondò (Milan), AngelicA (Bologna), Ravenna Musica, Imago Dei (Krems an der Donau, Austria), and Borealis (Bergen, Norway). For La Biennale Musica in Venice, he conducted the first official performance of Ottetto by S. Scodanibbio. He also conducted the Divertimento Ensemble in El Retablo de Maese Pedro by M. De Falla and Pierrot Lunaire by A. Schönberg.

He often works with youth ensembles and orchestras, taking on unique and challenging conducting challenges in the contemporary repertoire, such as: L. Berio's Laborintus II (2014), G. Ligeti's Aventures and Mysteries of the Macabre (2016), S. Reich's Tehillim (2022), Kammerkonzert, G. Ligeti's Piano Concerto (2023), W. Walton's Façade (2023), and B. Maderna's Don Perlimplin (2024).

He is artistic director of the Villa Nigra Opera Festival and musical director at the Scheggino Opera Summer School. He has taught on the Master's course in 20th-century and contemporary vocal music at the G. Verdi Conservatory in Ravenna and is professor of score reading at the G. Cantelli Conservatory in Novara.
